24th - 25th of September 2016
After an impressive introduction to the art of Japanese paper marbling (Suminagashi) and a prologue to the golden practices of letterpress printing, as part of the 4th edition of Visual Playground, we decided it was time we paid our friends at FABRIK a new productive visit. This time we plan on learning as much as possible about the offset printing techniques and the finishing processes, during a specially crafted intensive workshop (2 days / 16 hours). The inspiring presentations and experiments will take place at FABRIK (Ceremușului Street, 3-5, Bucharest) on the last weekend of September 2016.
Most of us art directors, illustrators or graphic designers don’t usually come to face with the printing machines guilty of cess and about these thrilling mechanisms that devour kilometers of paper and gallons of ink in order to translate files into majestic objects, the more certain we can be that a book, a poster or any other project we’ve been working on for days-months-years will eventually come out as planned. This workshop held right in the heart of the printing house and tutored by the FABRIK team will walk us through all the decisive steps for getting the perfect results after sending our precious files to the sorcerers in charge with printing them.
Fabrik is an interdisciplinary studio and shop that creates paper objects, limited edition books, foldable toys, or letterpress prints. Claudiu, Nicoleta and their team experiment and mix today’s technology with techniques from the 15th century, succeeding in turning beautiful ideas into beautiful objects. In their daily quest for better ways of shaping ideas and turning thoughts into material representations, they learn about the importance of a strong attention to details, about the value of constant patience and respect. The objects manufactured by them have been recognized by local and international awards: honorary mention at Book Design from all over the World (Leipzig, 2015), the typographic experiment award at The most Beautiful Books in Romania (2015), the young designer award at The most Beautiful Books in Romania (2015), etc. Their books have been the subject of several exhibitions: World Book Design 2014-2015, Printing Museum, Tokyo, Ieșit din Tipare, Museum of Art, Cluj, Romanian Design Week, Bucharest, 2013-2015.
